What is cognition?

Cognition is the ability to make sense of our inner and outer environment i.e. thinking, learning and interaction with other people and our surroundings. It is the process by which we make sense of the world.

How is cognition affected by brain injury?

Broken or damaged brain cells and/or changes in brain chemistry resulting from brain injury can weaken the signals which cause the brain to function, or sometimes stop them altogether. This can result in impairment or total loss of skills. Which skills are affected will depend upon the area of the brain which is injured. Cognitive, emotional and behavioural problems often have a greater impact in the longer term than physical disability.

What is CRT?

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy is the process of relearning the cognitive skills lost or altered through a structured programme of exercises designed to stimulate the brain. If skills cannot be relearned, then new ones are taught to compensate for lost cognitive function.

What is the aim of CRT?

The aim of CRT is to improve the ability to carry out everyday tasks resulting in an improved quality of life, confidence and self esteem.
